DJI GS Pro is an official DJI app (currently iOS only) for mapping with DJI drones. It functions similarly to other apps and includes many features that others do not. This guide will explain how to create a mapping mission using a DJI Phantom 3 or DJI Phantom 4 drone.
1. Turn on the drone and handheld controller and allow them to connect to each other. Plug your tablet or smart phone into the handheld controller's USB port. Open DJI GS Pro and tap “New”
2. Then tap on “PhotoMap”
3. Then choose “Tap"
4. The map will then zoom to your location. If you do not see any loaded maps your device does not have a data or wifi connection and you will need to connect in order to download. To avoid this, plan missions in advance from the office and save them, this will save the map along with the mission. (Save Mission go to Step 8) When planning missions from the office, you will need to manually navigate to the intended flight location first.
5. Once at the flight location tap on the center of the field. The app will then place a square on the field.
6. Tap and drag the corners of the square to the edges of the field. Tap on the + symbol between the corners to add another point, and then drag it. You will be able to create nearly any shape by adding more corners.
7. Now configure the flight parameters using the following values. These values are recommended for the standard FarmLens Crop Health Map. If a parameter is not listed, use the default setting.
Basic:
Shooting Angle – Parellel to Main Path
Capture Mode – Capture at Equal Distance Interval (If firmware does not allow, choose Capture at Equal Time Interval)
Flight Course Mode – Inside Mode
Altitude – 330 feet (100 meters)
Advanced:
Front Overlap Ratio – 80%
Side Overlap Ratio – 80%
Course Angle – Choose the most efficient angle. Set to 90 degrees to minimize Solar Vignetting* artifacts
8. Tap on the disc icon in the upper-left corner to save the mission for later use. If connected to the internet, this will also save the location's map tiles along with the mission waypoints.
9. Tap on the blue “airplane” icon in the upper-right corner when ready to fly. Double-check the intended mission is safe and does not interfere with trees, ridges, mountains, or buildings. Make sure the take off location is clear of all obstacles and people and overhanging hazards. When ready, press Start Mission and the drone will automatically take off and start the mission.
10. The drone will fly the mission until it completes, or the battery runs low. When the battery is depleted, the drone will automatically return to the starting location, and land. The pilot should be ready to take manual control of the drone to assure a safe landing. If the drone lands before the mission is completed, simply turn off the drone, remove the battery, and insert a fully-charged battery. The drone will automatically re-connect to the app. Once re-connected, tap the blue “airplane” icon again, and then Start Mission. The drone will automatically resume the mission from the last completed point. This can be repeated multiple times to overfly any size area.
